Thanksgiving Checklist

I like to use the Thanksgiving break as a big paperwork TO-DO-LIST.  Set yourself the goals of getting your paperwork together to put yourself in position to be successful for the Showcase in February.

1.  Identify 5 Colleges you would like to attend.  Look at our list of schools that attend.  Break out the lap top and start looking at the schools that interest you.  Make sure you like the University and not just the coach.  Create a spreadsheet of the pros and cons of the school.  Include location, cost, majors, offensive phil, defensive phil, student reviews, admission deadlines, admission requirements, whatever but be detailed and consistent.

2.  Talk to your parents about Money and College.  Do you want to see your parents start taking you more seriously.  Do you want to show them how mature you are.  At Thanksgiving dinner break out your spreadsheet you created from topic 1 and start talking about your college choices.  The topic of money should enter this conversation at some point.  Once you understand where the family is financially you can then start to make more realistic decisions.  Who knows great aunt Joyce at the end of the table may commit to helping you pay for some of the cost.  The important part is to show your parents that you are taking your college choice seriously.

3.  Apply to 2 schools.  They do not have to be your 2 top choices but you need to apply to 2 schools.  You will practice the application process, and you will have options after the Showcase.  You need to apply to 2 of them lets get two out of the way here.

4.  Fill out the FAFSA Forecaster on the FAFSA website.  This will give you and your parents practice on the financial aid process and you will learn how to transfer the information from the 1040EZ to the FAFSA form.  This is 100% free.  I can not stress how important it is to fill out your FAFSA and to know your EFC #.  Your EFC # is way more important then being 2nd team all district.  Please trust me on this and memorize your number.  You will not be able to get an official EFC # until your parents do their 2015 taxes.  However you can get an estimate which should help you in your search for the right school.

2015 Showcase Follow Up

From what I am hearing the showcase was very successful for a lot of participants.  We set records with regards to colleges, participants, and participating high schools.

Right now if you participated you should have your FAFSA filled out and have been accepted to at least 5 colleges.  You should also be receiving a lot of cost of attendance estimates from the schools.  You may even be planning out your spring break to visit some of the schools that have been contacting you.

If you have not been receiving any offers I suggest that you start applying to some of the participating schools or go and check your email inbox.  Every year I put my email address in as one of the participants along with my contact information.  I have received 8 emails to apply to a school and go play football for them.  THIS WAS JUST FROM BEING IN THE BOOK, I NEVER PARTICIPATED.

The fact of the matter is that if you have a desire to play you need to take a bit of ownership and start applying to the colleges.  I dont know what else to tell you.  When we survey the coaches every year their top 2 responses on why kids do not end up playing football in college is that they did not apply and they did not fill out their FAFSA.  Take control of your future, put on your big boy pants, and take care of your paperwork.

Creating the Athletic Resume

I get asked all of the time what should I include on my Athletic Resume.  Over the years I ask this question to the coaches attending the Showcase and this is usually what they say.

Your Contact Information:

Name
Email Address
Phone Number
High School
Position

Your Coaches Contact Information: (Do Not piss off your coach between the end of the season and the end of your Sr year.  It will come back to haunt you).

Name
Email
Phone Number

A Picture of Yourself: (If you have muscles take the picture with your shirt off.  If you do not have muscles then keep your shirt on.)  Put this in the top Right Corner of the page

Academic Information:

SAT Score
ACT Score
GPA
Class Rank
FAFSA Score

The Academic Information is by far the most important information for you to include on your resume.  You should also memorize this information.  You will be asked this information 10X more then your athletic resume.  Sometimes coaches will ask you what your class rank is.  Then they will ask you what your 40 time is.  If you don't know your class rank and only know your 40 time the coach will scratch you off of their list.

Athletic Information

HUDL or Youtube link
Position
Height
Weight
Athletic Accolades (All District Etc)

Athletic Information is really the least important part of your whole resume.  I realize that you think it is important and you want to brag and you are proud of the accomplishments.

On the back of your resume put a copy of your transcript.  Make around 40 copies of this resume.  Put it in a folder and bring it to the showcase.  During the last 2 hours of the event there will be a meet and greet session.  Put the folder to the side of the bubble and break it out during the meet and greet.
